The more I think about life the more I realize how small things make a difference in our lives. It is not the major events in our lives that make us who we are…it is the small things. Those daily choices we make that seem almost insignificant but then mean a lot when added up.
I recently had a situation where my 16 year old daughter found a small odd job working in an office filing for the owners. Being a teenager they gave her the option to be paid once a week or daily. She opted for daily not knowing the pitfall of that decision. She collected her first paycheck and came home unhappy. She was paid $40 for the day but when she came home she only had $20. She could not figure out how she came home with so little. I asked her what she did for lunch since she was gone all day. She told me she went to a fast food place. So I asked what she ordered. Teenager, remember…she ordered a full meal plus a milk shake and of course everything was large. I asked if that was all and she said, well no. She also went to a coffee shop during her break and got a large mocha. After we went over the cost, I explained that is why people take a sack lunch to work. Making your lunch is far less expensive than eating out. Of course it does not hurt that mom and dad bought the food that is at home which really makes it inexpensive. As for coffee most businesses provide coffee for their employees. She thought about what I said. I also asked if they had a microwave and she said yes. I told she could take more than just a sandwich if she could warm things up.
The next few days I saw her taking a lunch sack she made to work. By the end of the week she had more money and was happy that she managed to keep most of it. She had learned a valuable lesson that day. It is the small decisions that we make through out our day that make the difference.
I find that true in business as well. Owners will choose to hire their brother-in-law or someone they know to build their website who is not a professional. Then they wonder why it does not work for their business. A good website should pay for itself.
Going down a road and you don’t like where it is ending up? Make those small changes and end up where you want to go.
